Day 7: Tickets to the Show - Performance Energy (Aug 2022)

August 2022. A year after “Dear Somebody.”
By this point, people were asking: when’s the show?
Not “can you perform?” but “where can I get tickets?”
“Tickets to the Show EP” was my answer. This wasn’t about proving I could rap - that was established. This was about proving I could perform. That I could command a stage. That I could deliver live what I delivered on wax.
The Dave Chappelle sample (”Uh you mind waiting for the punchline first brother”) set the tone perfectly. Y’all jumping ahead. Let me finish.
“Tickets to the Show” (title track) was pure performance energy: “1 flip / 2 flip / 3 flip / 4 / You see a real nigga when I step thru the door.” The bars referenced everyone from Eminem to Rakim to Kerry James Marshall. “I’m legendary in the shelter like Eminem / My prices high but they spinning with me like ceiling fans.” Art references. Detroit pride. Technical skill. Everything you’d want in a show.
“Van Gogh” compared my craft to painting: “I can paint the perfect picture like I’m Van Gogh / I be going all the places that you can’t go.” The hook was defiant: “Fuck you and everybody that you came with / Real niggas love me all the fake niggas hate it.” No apologies. The bars name-dropped Rembrandt, Rothko, Kerry James Marshall, Hebru Brantley - I was positioning myself as an artist in the truest sense.
“Am I on One?” got introspective about being caught up - in the moment, in desire, in the lifestyle: “It was one of those nights / Where everything wrong / But it feel so right.” The vulnerability balanced the confidence of the first two tracks.
This EP was tight. Three tracks. No filler. Just performance-ready material that proved I could deliver.
“Tickets to the Show” was me saying: I’m ready for the stage. Are you ready to buy a ticket?
