WHAT I LIKE SEEING THE MOST

What I Like Seeing the Most

October 15, 2022

When it comes to female rap there is one name that is shaking hip hop to its core, coming straight outta Memphis, its Gloria Hallelujah Woods, b.k.a., Glorilla! Glorilla took 2022 by storm with her Hit Kidd produced smash, “F.N.F. (Let’s Go)”. The infectious track had every one chanting “F R E E..” and “Let’s Gooooooooo”.

Big Glo caught viral attention, mainly in part due to her music video, which features her and friends, which people described them as “regular” and “ordinary” women. Meaning none of them look surgically enhanced like how many of our instagram feeds look today.

As her song was going viral, Glorilla and her associates faced many criticisms, mainly critiques concerning their looks. However, that only made Glo’s ascension that much more satisfying.

This is what I love seeing the most, the glow up! Specifically w/ Glorilla’s metoric rise. I loved seeing her get new teeth after being ridiculed, I loved seeing her receive star glam treatment, and I love seeing her performances rise. I remember when my boy was telling me how Glorilla had a show in the natti during that time, she only had F.N.F., so I didn’t expect much of the performance. I knew she was collecting them beginnning of fame club bags.

The Boy and Big Glo!

Then as time went on, she start proving herself , song after song. She made me a believer when she dropped that “Tomorrow” record and I’m talking before Cardi B hopped on it. When she started her verse with, “Looking good as hell today, just sent my n**** five attachments,” I said Oh yeah she hard foreal! Then I heard all the stuff she did with GlossUp, HitKidd, Slimeroni, Aleza, and K Carbon (its carbonnnnnn lmao). I knew I was listening to a bonafide star.

I love watching each step and being able to tell when the money hit (lol) and when she stepped into stardom completely. Seeing her Rolling Loud and BETHIPHOP awards performances let me know that she’s here to stay and with the recent release of her first EP, Glorilla may have been handpicked by God himself to takeover the reigns of female rap. I look forward to seeing her grow.

HOW RECENCY BIAS WILL AFFECT THE NEW KENDRICK RELEASE.

HOW RECENCY BIAS WILL AFFECT THE NEW KENDRICK RELEASE.

APRIL 18, 2022.

“Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers” 5.13. 22

I. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE…

It was a snowy day in Michigan. As expected during this time because we have 80 months of winter and 1 week of summer. Anywho, your mans was just scrolling down his time, when I see a press release posted on Elliott Wilson page. First thing I see was the “PgLang” header, I said “uh huh..” then I see a release date and an album title?!?! Oh its serious time! The one whom they call Kendrick Lamar is returning?

After so long since the Pulitzer Prize winning album DAMN. released, no one really knows what to expect from the TDE veteran. What I do know is this album is the MOST IMPORTANT RELEASE in his discography! Why? Ok here it is..

II. J. COLE’S STRONG CLAIM FOR NUMBER ONE!

Since the mid 2010s hip hop has held the trifecta of Drake, J.Cole, & Kendrick Lamar as the three headed monster of the greatest current mc,s. The number one spot has been constantly interchangeable based on the performances throughout the years from the big 3. Drizzy is always my favorite personal number one but I’d be. a lying fool if I don’t give Jermaine Cole his credit.

Now Jermaine has been running circles around people since about 2018. He’s the new school feature king, he’s been consistently releasing great albums, and he’s on fire as an executive. J. Cole took a strong lead to me when he strategically released the Dreamville compliation mixtape “D-DAY w/ DJ DRAMA” to coincide with his own festival and when he dropped that monster verse on BIA’s new single “LONDON”. Cole clearly made his claim for top position and Drizzy is always drizzy, where does that leave Kendrick?

III.AN ACTIVE KENDRICK?!?!!?

We got a preview of the innovation to come when K.Dot gave us the tractor trailer flow on Baby Keem records and we see the executive moves he making by breaking away from his home label to start his own enterprise. However we can’t act like those years of inactivity haven’t affected K.Dot in a negative way. Now a person with sense will argue that Kendrick’s quality is so top tier he doesn’t need to have the same output as his peers. That person would be right because Kendrick’s legacy is cemented and you cannot take away those classic albums but how can we honestly say he number one when Drizzy and even Cole kept their foot on the pedal, staying active and creating moments while K.Dot is chilling with his family getting his hair braided.

www.oklama.com

So how will recency bias affect K.Dot now? If Kendrick new album meet people’s expectations let alone surpass it, people are gonna undoubtedly says he’s number one and no one is messing with him! Which will be an over-exaggeration because this one album no matter how good it is can’t put him over Cole and Drake, he been too inactive!! This album must be the beginning of a run! I mean a serious run! He gotta drop fire, Baby keem gotta follow up with fire, we need new PgLang artists to debut, and shorter gaps between Kendrick release! He has to go on a tear!

Now if the album is whack….that is literally the worst thing that can happen for him. Because people are going to act like Section.80 or To Pimp A Butterfly don’t exist then they’re going to act like it was blasphemous to compare him to Cole and Drizzy in the first place. Let’s get this clear no matter how whack this album is it cannot end K.Dot’s career! People still don’t have a Good Kid Maad City in their catalog.

The BS starting already lmao

So that’s really it man, the album don’t release until May 13, 2022 so in the meantime prepare to see the wildest takes and even on release date prepare to see the most bs, good and bad, you ever seen. What are you expecting from this album? Do he need features? What about Production? Let me know how you feel beloved, thanks for reading!!

PERCEPTION CHANGES

PERCEPTION CHANGES

January 30, 2022

One day I was listening to The Boy, (Drizzy Drake), I believe it was No Friends in the Industry, and I was like wow its crazy how menacing Drake sounds now. I remember when he was the bud of soft jokes, he may get those jokes still but its nowhere near how it was pre Nothing Was the Same. It had me thinking like man perception really changes.

Perception can be defined as “ a way of regarding, understanding, or interpreting something; a mental impression “. I vividly recall Drake’s original reception among rap fans. He was the loverboy way before CLB, but thats it, He was the guy who rapped extremely well but he was just a “soft guy” in his feelings. I never felt Drake was soft, if that’s the case everybody whoever made a R&B song is soft. People was letting his R&B side define him because that was extremely popular with women. So if you cater to women somehow you'‘re “soft”.

Anyways…

I believe perception started to changed for Drake starting with his 2015 release “If You’re Reading This Its Too Late”. Some may regard it as his best album and if it isn’t its definitely his most controversial release. As we all know, Drizzy’s pen was brought into question when Meek Mill exposed via twitter that Quentin Miller was the ghostwriter behind the most coveted singles on the project. Hip Hop purists were left flabbergasted, “oh no the boy didn’t write his raps for this album”, “how long has this going on???”, “is his 6pack even real"???!!”, by the way no one said that but pillars in the hip hop community were disappointed in the news. However, the real Drake fans did not give a single damn that he had help with his hits. We heard the demos, we were elated Quentin did not release the records as the main recording artist.

As most can recall when Meek called out Drake many thought it was the end of Aubrey Graham as we know it, and if this was to go into an audio world war, Meek and boisterous voice would surely come out the victor. What’s so ironic is, back in 2013 during our college days me and my roommates had a hypothetical argument about who would win in a battle, Drake or Meek Mill?

Me and one of my roommates instantly said Drake. My other roommate said Meek without a second thought and his reasoning was the same as any other rap fan, “Meek was a battle rapper this is what he do!!”. That mattered to me none beloved, I knew Drake is a perpetual student of the game and I recalled some spats he had during the Comeback Season era. I knew he would be more than ready but the world didn’t.

So Drake released Back to Back after the warning shot Charged Up and from this moment he began to look like the big bad wolf to me. Check it out, he drops Summer Sixteen which was basically a taunt for the first half of the song. Then he makes songs like Free Smoke, talking reckless saying anyone can get it. He gets so deep in his aggressive Drake rap bag people started rumors that he had XXXtentacion killed. And people supposedly had evidence! Wait… but this was just the guy everyone called soft but now people believe he’s capable of murdering bubbling rap stars.

It doesn’t make things better when he then drops a song called “Mob Ties” bragging about his “alleged” Houston street connections. It doesn’t stops there beloved, he gets on the 2019 song of the year, SICKO MODE and had everybody singing about driving down Ye’s block and shooting it up lmao! Oh you thought it was over??? No!! During the 2020 quarantine he dropped a viral tiktok inspired hit “Toosie Slide”. Everyone’s dancing but he spends the whole song basically talking about murdering someone and no one batted a eye! lmao.

So how did perception change from softest guy in the universe to 6God Badmon??! It’s quite simple actually,

I. CONSISTENCY

Image via HollywoodLife

Often first impressions are last impressions, meaning what someone first meet you as that’s how you are always perceived at them. If you was the square dude that wasn’t known for having money or being flashy but years later you turn into a flashy street guy, no one’s gonna think hey that’s “flashy street guy”. They’re going to think why is “square basic dude” trying to be “flashy street guy”.

The only way we’ll believe “flashy street guy” is who he is, is if he consistently shows us that. We gotta see you flashing more than a year or two, and its gotta be gradual, you just can’t pop up on the gram with a stick in your hand when you just had a Charles Darwin book in your hand. Boy go sit down!!

Drizzy didn’t just start popping up outta nowhere with more aggressiveness in his raps it was build up. He let us know in 2013 on Pound Cake/Paris Morton 2 “Screw all that happy to be here ish yall want me on”. He was being bold saying yall gon respect, when his respect was tested for the first time on a huge level with Meek he responded accordingly. Another thing his image changed, he wasn’t scrawny Degrassi drake. He got muscles and a beard and looked like he was capable of physical damage. So the progressive tough talk was easier to digest.

This went longer than I intended, but all in all I wanted to make my point that someone perception of you can change over time. Various factors must come into play first. It even happened in my own life but that is a story for another day.

THE REPACKAGE

THE REPACKAGE

Available This Friday!

Available This Friday!

Drake just announced that he’ll be releasing an “album” this Friday, featuring all of our favorite loose cuts. Songs that we no longer have to sit thru ads on youtube or shuffle thru Soundcloud for because they will be available on our favorite streaming platform.

Drake just widely exposed something I already knew and something you will know today. Old quality work can always be repurposed for a new gain. That album will surely debut on the charts and will be streamed religiously because people already love those songs and believe or not some Drizzy “fans” have never heard those songs before. Ridiculous!

Old work can only be repurposed if it is QUALITY and ORGANIZED.

As with myself, I do what Drizzy does with every LIFE LOGS release. Every article that is in my book(s) have already been published online. They are articles that already went viral (and still going viral) and are quality written works.

However, the book format organizes those quality articles. Someone who is a new reader or even an avid reader doesn’t want to shuffle thru my blog and/or website for all the articles to read them.

So every few months, I compile articles from a certain time period into book format. The book features the same articles with some minor updates if I have additional or a change of thought w/ an article that was previously purposed.

Do not fall into the trap of thinking “I must always be creating” no you don’t. Continue to create at a pace comfortable at you and think of how you can repurpose some of your old work that’s been overlooked in the past.

Once you’ve successfully done that people will anticipate your next move just like we’re already anticipating that next Drake album.

RELATABILITY : THE UNDEFEATED CHARACTERISTIC

RELATABILITY : THE UNDEFEATED CHARACTERISTIC

I was looking at a meme posted on Instagram and as I was laughing it made me think of “Damn, how could people be so many states removed from each other and be able to relate to the same thing”.

And that’s when it hit me, relatability  is an undefeated characteristic. Being able to relate to someone cause for deeper and often more meaningful connections.

It’s why people want certain politicians in office or why everyone use a Drake lyric as their caption , it’s because of how they can relate to everyday person.

lyrics from “Doing it Wrong” by Drake, from his sophomore LP “TAKE CARE”, https://tidal.com/album/14234315

Relatability extends further then business purposes. It is how friendships are formed, how mentors are chosen, etc. it’s a way of life.

And no matter where you go or what you choose to be, to be relatable is always a strength to have.

GOOD ART DESERVES YOUR FINANCIAL SUPPORT

Drake's SCORPION available now, https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/scorpion/1405365674

Last Friday was the release of hip hop’s most anticipated release of the year, Drake’s SCORPION. When SCORPION was released to digital retailers, I immediately purchased the album (not stream it, although I saved it on streaming platforms later for extra support), the point being when I deemed Drizzy’s project worthy of purchase, I did not hesitate to financially support.

Which brings me to my point good art deserves your financial support. Art is definitely subjective and when a person discovers good art that comes with a price tag a disconnect arises. People are quick to spend money on multiple trivial things but think almost twice as much before ever spending a dollar on “art”. Music is subject to illegal downloading, Small Businesses are subject to “can I get it for free”, and visual artists are stuck with the words “this is dope”.

"Past Times" by Kerry James Marshall

"Past Times" by Kerry James Marshall

If art is to continue to prosper, it will take the financial backing of the people who enjoy it on the daily basis. If we claim we like something we have to put our money where our mouth is. Much like Puff Daddy did when he purchased Kerry James Marshall painting for a whopping $21 Million, making it the highest selling piece by a living black artist.

It is time to stop withholding dollars towards the art community and start a surplus of funding because the financial backing will increase employment, decrease shenanigans, and add to the welfare of the planet by uniting people under a creative umbrella .
