NIKE AND THE ILLUSION OF PARTNERSHIP

NIKE AND THE ILLUSION OF PARTNERSHIP

KAWHI’s “KLAW” logo

KAWHI’s “KLAW” logo

Recently Kawhi Leonard filed a lawsuit  against Nike over his “Klaw “ logo. For those unaware, Kawhi Leonard is a basketball player that currently plays for the Toronto Raptors.

According to Sports Illustrated, Leonard alleged that NIKE filed a copyright registration without the permission of Leonard.

Leonard was adamant about the logo used by Nike was an original creation of his and was conceptualized way back during his college days.

He insisted that he only allowed NIKE to use his logo on products on a permissive basis. NIKE was to acknowledge they had no ownership of the logo just limited uses that required Leonard’s permission.

This is where Kawhi went wrong. Kawhi is learning what previous collaborators learned the hard way. NIKE is always gonna look out for NIKE first.

It’s like when Kanye was frustrated doing his “partnership” with NIKE because he wasn’t receiving royalties for his shoes & his collaborations was limited to a pair of sneakers every two years.

When NIKE was finished with Kanye they took his colorways applied them to other shoes with no afterthought about Kanye.

Same with Sean Wotherspoon, who is the owner of ROUND TWO, a vintage store with flagships in Virginia, Miami, NY, and LA.

After, they were released, soon after Sean started teasing samples of what to come next.

First peek at the second wave! Still early on the sample process, and there’s a lot that’s going to change! I’m thinking add some color to the sole, make that air bubble infrared, gotta change the sock liner to yellow, maybe a new color insole?!, fix the denim on the tabs, and do a gradient from light to dark blue instead of all light blue?!? What new patches should I include with this pair?! I couldn’t be happier holding these babies in my hand, can’t wait to see the final sample! So much more dope Nike shit to talk about, can’t wait to tell everyone! 🌊🌊🌊🌊 @nikesportswear @nike

- Sean Wotherspoon

He thought that next was going to come but Nike went “NOPE”. No official explanation given, just the end of a partnership.

However, he did have this to say.

"I’ve been done working with [Nike], at least on another SW collab, for a while. Still lots of good friends there. I help when asked, but being able to spread my wings again is the best feeling ever,"

Well, its best to interpret that as NIKE gave him the boot and instead of being salty about it he took the bigger road to ensure no bridges were burnt.

People were concerned with the partnership when he posted a picture of him in a pair of YEEZY DESERT RAT 500’s.

Who knows what his contract entailed but if Nike let a pair of yeezys stopped them from capitalizing more on the hype from those Sean Wotherspoon sneakers, shame on them.

Moving along, I would like to offer up this quote from Parent-Athlete and master wordsmith, Lavar Ball.

“NO NO CHECK THIS OUT NIKE GAVE THEM… THEY CAN’T TAKE THEY BRAND WITH THEM..”

“IF LEBRON AND KOBE LEAVE NIKE THEY WON’T LET THEM TAKE THE DESIGN”

“THATS THE BRAND NIKE MADE FOR THEM”

Lavar, didn’t tell a single lie. Recently Kobe launched one of his post-retirement ventures, Mamba Sports Academy. The sports academy offers a variety of training programs to Youth and Adults and isn’t limited to Basketball. Its all about embracing the “Mamba Mentality” Kobe possessed on the court. Its the mentality credited for getting Kobe 5 NBA Championships and many other accolades.

This new venture is all built off Kobe likeness and image. People will literally sign up for this camp because Kobe is attached to it. So It was kinda odd, when I saw the new merchandise for the Mamba Sports Academy.

On Eastbay, the items aren’t even listed with Kobe name on them. The first word you see is Nike. It’s clear the sponsorship is with Nike so obviously you will see their name but one word doesn’t feature “Kobe” or at the very least “MAMBA”.

That was a clear sign to me that when it come to these partnerships, NIKE will be prioritized first and if you’re not willing to do that they will easily find someone that will.

Hopefully, Kawhi recovers his Intellectual Property and doesn’t make the same mistake with New Balance. Hopefully there will be clauses in his contract to ensure the proper uses with his logo and that He’ll never have to battle a Corporate Giant again and just focus on his Legacy.

THE INSTALENSE

THE INSTALENSE

Recently I was watching an instastory of Pharrell’s as he journeyed through Japan. I thought to myself “man this is really cool what he’s showing me I need to make sure I hit places up like these when I hit Japan “ and then “I thought holy crap this is what instagram is really for.” I believe instagram is a tool to help show people what their aspirations and goals look like in tangible form. By having an inside look they can better visualize desirable things for themselves.

Although mostly instagram is used as an ego-driven instant gratification platform, I believe it to be more credible than that. Japan has always been a dream visit of mine due to how much I love anime and a couple of other things. Seeing Skateboard P expose so much of his routine, makes me actualize the same things for myself.

Another instagram user by the name of Kool.Kiy also serves as an inspiration. He is a talented young man who has his own successful clothing line, though people may not know him personally they have definitely seen his work before.

IMG_6581.JPG

At time he may posts his sales by screen-shotting his Shopify notifications that shows an abundance of sales in short time periods. Now in the eyes of lames, fools, and hams this can be taken the wrong way very quickly.

However in the eyes of myself I see something that can also be for me. Him showing his sales and the process behind his craft allows me to visualize the same for myself and use his a success as motivation and a guiding light rather to hate on.

Next time while surfing thru the gram (which you’ll probably do immediately after reading this) think about each post that features one of your desires, as something that can serve as inspiration.

Like Meek Mill classic captions used to say For Motivational Purposes Only.

GOOD ART DESERVES YOUR FINANCIAL SUPPORT

Drake's SCORPION available now, https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/scorpion/1405365674

Last Friday was the release of hip hop’s most anticipated release of the year, Drake’s SCORPION. When SCORPION was released to digital retailers, I immediately purchased the album (not stream it, although I saved it on streaming platforms later for extra support), the point being when I deemed Drizzy’s project worthy of purchase, I did not hesitate to financially support.

Which brings me to my point good art deserves your financial support. Art is definitely subjective and when a person discovers good art that comes with a price tag a disconnect arises. People are quick to spend money on multiple trivial things but think almost twice as much before ever spending a dollar on “art”. Music is subject to illegal downloading, Small Businesses are subject to “can I get it for free”, and visual artists are stuck with the words “this is dope”.

"Past Times" by Kerry James Marshall

"Past Times" by Kerry James Marshall

If art is to continue to prosper, it will take the financial backing of the people who enjoy it on the daily basis. If we claim we like something we have to put our money where our mouth is. Much like Puff Daddy did when he purchased Kerry James Marshall painting for a whopping $21 Million, making it the highest selling piece by a living black artist.

It is time to stop withholding dollars towards the art community and start a surplus of funding because the financial backing will increase employment, decrease shenanigans, and add to the welfare of the planet by uniting people under a creative umbrella .

A SHOW IN THE SHOW THAT'S THE WAY TO GO

A SHOW IN THE SHOW THATS THE WAY TO GO

With heavy content driven shows it can be troublesome driving all the ideas through the limited box of storytelling. I noticed when themes that are apart of the show but not necessarily central to the plot, a satirical show is created to help dive into those story points.

INSECURE

IMG_5358.JPG

During season 2 of HBO’s INSECURE, the satirical show in the show was called “Due North”. Due North was about a love affair during slave times in which a slavemaster was in love with one of his slaves.

One of themes in the show deals with White and Black people relationship in the work space. In the show, Issa (main character) works for a white boss and Molly (Issa’s best friend) is a lawyer in a very white firm who doesn’t get the respect she deserves.

While the show is an essentially a love comedy drama it has other themes that deal with race relations and the fake show is used to dive deeper into those themes that can’t be handled by the characters due to story restrictions.

DEAR WHITE PEOPLE

Defamation, the satirical take on ABC’s Scandal

Defamation, the satirical take on ABC’s Scandal

In both seasons NETFLIX’s Dear White People had two shows that dealt with satire. More specifically it deals with how Black People are perceived in the media. The first show featured a parody of Scandal, which featured an over exaggeration of the show’s popular character, Olivia Pope. Her character is used to show how interracial relationships are perceived. This is used to vicariously highlight the feelings surrounding the relationship between two characters in the show (Gabe-white male and Sam- black female).

Breakout star/writer, Lena Waithe, stars in Trap House Tricks

The other show trap house tricks, features a parody of Love & Hip Hop. Another show used to explore the exaggeration of black portrayal in mainstream media. Being that the basis of the show stems from the results of white students holding a black face party, perception of the black community is a major theme in the show and it takes different avenues of storytelling to explore all realms of a theme with such depth.

TAKEAWAY

The inside shows are a wonderful tool of storytelling and showrunners/creators should think about including them more to explore subplots/themes that central to the story but aren’t the focal point of the story.

HOW COLE HAS ME READY FOR HIS NEW ALBUM

HOW COLE HAS ME READY FOR HIS NEW ALBUM

2018, has been a spectacular year in music and it’s only getting better. Cardi delivered, Nicki is coming back strong, and Drizzy is readying a career defining album. Hell even Kendrick is out here winning Pulitzer Prizes like he’s Ernest Hemingway.

But this Roc Nation signee and Dreamville’s Commander-in-Chief, has his own trick up his sleeve. His new album “K.O.D.” is set to release 4/20 and it has the world on its toes, specifically me.

Here’s the 3 factors that has me ready for the latest Jermaine project.

I. ART DIRECTION

ART by Detroit-based ARTIST, SIXMAU  - https://www.instagram.com/sixmau

The cover for Cole’s latest project is eye catching to say the least. It features Cole wearing a crown with children beneath him indulging in various drugs.

After a closer look me and the homie determined there was more to this painting that met the eye.

The children beneath Cole seemed to be lined up in an order of gateway drugs to the harshest level of drugs and it looks like what seems to be a loop, that takes the viewer to the harshest level of drugs back to the point of death (the last image behind the child is a skull).

Realizing the underlying messages in the artwork for Cole’s album made me think, how deep does the album go? [how deep is the intro? Lol, throwback Cole reference]. If the album’s half as good as the art I won’t turn it off for a while.

notice how the kids are riding the drugs like it’s a rocket ship, essentially they’re getting “high”

II. MYSTIQUE

IMG_2819.JPG

Campaign for the album started with a series of shows stretching from New York to London exclaiming the public to arrive early and to leave their phones behind.

IMG_2820.JPG

Random Cole shows in such prominent places makes one think, “what exactly is Cole up to”? Well it turns out, J.Cole played the crowd his newest album in which he encouraged listeners to cherish hearing the album first rather than explaining its contents. That in which only makes anticipation for the album even greater, its like someone seeing Black Panther before you but not giving out any of its details yet.

The mystique also increases with the album’s meaning. We spent almost half the day (okay slight boost) trying to figure out what the hell does “K.O.D.” means. The meaning holds such importance because it would give us insight into what the album could possibly sound like, This could be compared to when people were trying to guess the acronym for Yeezy’s last album. At that time all we had was “T.L.O.P.” who would’ve known it would’ve stood for The Life of Pablo.

FullSizeRender.jpg

Mystery always work in one’s favor when used correctly and in Cole’s case it is working quite well.

III. REDEMPTION

Its time to be honest fellow hip hop fans I did not enjoy Jermaine’s last effort, 4 Your Eyez Only. I thought it was cool how in the end, he was speaking from his deceased friend’s perspective but at the end of the day, it was just something I could not connect with. I haven’t really been engulfed in J.Cole since The Come Up, Warm Up, Friday Night Lights days. Those were the times I felt his hunger in every bar and I really felt like his soul was seaping through the records. Forest Hills was a great album but even so I didn’t find myself repeating that album much either. My favorites were “January 28th” and “St. Tropez” everything else really didn’t compare but they weren’t bad songs.

Also, I was tired of seeing Cole have no features or outside production. I feel like he would greatly benefit from both being that he doesn’t collaborate as often as his peers.

Anyways the energy from this album is daring me to say this could easily be J.Cole’s best album to date. I believe he will not fail and he will deliver just like I knew he could.
