PERCEPTION CHANGES

PERCEPTION CHANGES

January 30, 2022

One day I was listening to The Boy, (Drizzy Drake), I believe it was No Friends in the Industry, and I was like wow its crazy how menacing Drake sounds now. I remember when he was the bud of soft jokes, he may get those jokes still but its nowhere near how it was pre Nothing Was the Same. It had me thinking like man perception really changes.

Perception can be defined as “ a way of regarding, understanding, or interpreting something; a mental impression “. I vividly recall Drake’s original reception among rap fans. He was the loverboy way before CLB, but thats it, He was the guy who rapped extremely well but he was just a “soft guy” in his feelings. I never felt Drake was soft, if that’s the case everybody whoever made a R&B song is soft. People was letting his R&B side define him because that was extremely popular with women. So if you cater to women somehow you'‘re “soft”.

Anyways…

I believe perception started to changed for Drake starting with his 2015 release “If You’re Reading This Its Too Late”. Some may regard it as his best album and if it isn’t its definitely his most controversial release. As we all know, Drizzy’s pen was brought into question when Meek Mill exposed via twitter that Quentin Miller was the ghostwriter behind the most coveted singles on the project. Hip Hop purists were left flabbergasted, “oh no the boy didn’t write his raps for this album”, “how long has this going on???”, “is his 6pack even real"???!!”, by the way no one said that but pillars in the hip hop community were disappointed in the news. However, the real Drake fans did not give a single damn that he had help with his hits. We heard the demos, we were elated Quentin did not release the records as the main recording artist.

As most can recall when Meek called out Drake many thought it was the end of Aubrey Graham as we know it, and if this was to go into an audio world war, Meek and boisterous voice would surely come out the victor. What’s so ironic is, back in 2013 during our college days me and my roommates had a hypothetical argument about who would win in a battle, Drake or Meek Mill?

Me and one of my roommates instantly said Drake. My other roommate said Meek without a second thought and his reasoning was the same as any other rap fan, “Meek was a battle rapper this is what he do!!”. That mattered to me none beloved, I knew Drake is a perpetual student of the game and I recalled some spats he had during the Comeback Season era. I knew he would be more than ready but the world didn’t.

So Drake released Back to Back after the warning shot Charged Up and from this moment he began to look like the big bad wolf to me. Check it out, he drops Summer Sixteen which was basically a taunt for the first half of the song. Then he makes songs like Free Smoke, talking reckless saying anyone can get it. He gets so deep in his aggressive Drake rap bag people started rumors that he had XXXtentacion killed. And people supposedly had evidence! Wait… but this was just the guy everyone called soft but now people believe he’s capable of murdering bubbling rap stars.

It doesn’t make things better when he then drops a song called “Mob Ties” bragging about his “alleged” Houston street connections. It doesn’t stops there beloved, he gets on the 2019 song of the year, SICKO MODE and had everybody singing about driving down Ye’s block and shooting it up lmao! Oh you thought it was over??? No!! During the 2020 quarantine he dropped a viral tiktok inspired hit “Toosie Slide”. Everyone’s dancing but he spends the whole song basically talking about murdering someone and no one batted a eye! lmao.

So how did perception change from softest guy in the universe to 6God Badmon??! It’s quite simple actually,

I. CONSISTENCY

Image via HollywoodLife

Often first impressions are last impressions, meaning what someone first meet you as that’s how you are always perceived at them. If you was the square dude that wasn’t known for having money or being flashy but years later you turn into a flashy street guy, no one’s gonna think hey that’s “flashy street guy”. They’re going to think why is “square basic dude” trying to be “flashy street guy”.

The only way we’ll believe “flashy street guy” is who he is, is if he consistently shows us that. We gotta see you flashing more than a year or two, and its gotta be gradual, you just can’t pop up on the gram with a stick in your hand when you just had a Charles Darwin book in your hand. Boy go sit down!!

Drizzy didn’t just start popping up outta nowhere with more aggressiveness in his raps it was build up. He let us know in 2013 on Pound Cake/Paris Morton 2 “Screw all that happy to be here ish yall want me on”. He was being bold saying yall gon respect, when his respect was tested for the first time on a huge level with Meek he responded accordingly. Another thing his image changed, he wasn’t scrawny Degrassi drake. He got muscles and a beard and looked like he was capable of physical damage. So the progressive tough talk was easier to digest.

This went longer than I intended, but all in all I wanted to make my point that someone perception of you can change over time. Various factors must come into play first. It even happened in my own life but that is a story for another day.

SHOULD HAVE APPRECIATED IT

SHOULD HAVE APPRECIATED IT

With the recent scare of COVID-19 (infamously known as the “corona virus” ) running rampant, we’re being shown a side we always knew about humanity.

We always known people take things for granted and go crazy when they realize it shouldn’t be taken for granted anymore.

People homes should’ve been filled with basic necessities.

Hands should’ve been washed, an emergency food fund should always be at the forefront of the mind, basic preparedness was always needed.

200313120158-02-empty-aisle-smart--final-grocery-store-0307-exlarge-169.jpg

But now people’s fear have drove them to shop like crazy, frantically getting whatever items are left.

Just like earlier this year with Kobe’s tragic passing.

Only the few that recognized the greatness in Kobe apparel was already hipped to the classics Nike & Adidas produces.

But what happened when he died?

You guessed it..prices surged thru the roof!!

Shoes that were once $120 going for $1500,

Screen Shot 2020-03-19 at 8.14.12 PM.png

Kobe gear was always readily available, people always knew he was a Goat, why was the appreciation taken for granted.

It’s an age old question that get tiresome to answer but always need to be addressed.

Obviously we should appreciate things more before they become scare and that starts by living with gratitude.

When we’re grateful to live life and see greatness we appreciate them different.

tumblr_66a59fa82d08cce1805f03762eeca1bc_519ea477_640.jpg

I’m grateful to witness a run like Lebron’s so I purchase his sneakers and make items inspired by him that shows my gratitude.

I’m appreciative of God placing me in this flesh so I try to honor it by treating it like a temple.

Keeping it clean, eating a certain, and protecting my mind at all costs.

If we learn to move different, when things get dire we won’t turn into scoundrel we can move on with proper adjustment because we’ve prepared and didn’t take this life for granted.

REALIZED YOU’RE CLOSE

REALIZED YOU’RE CLOSE

The other day was I was playing Super Mario Run on my phone. I usually just play it to pass time, but I seen that was I close to a big in-game achievement. Something called “Princess Peach’s Cake(PPC)”. PPC was available for a while but you needed a bunch of a requirements fulfilled to acquire it so I never paid attention to it.

See How Close I Am. If I Had Time I would Play it All Day until I got the Cake.

See How Close I Am. If I Had Time I would Play it All Day until I got the Cake.

However, I noticed I was much closer to fulfilling the requirements than I expected which inclined me to keep playing.

Which brings me to my point. Once you realize how close you are to an insurmountable feat, you must continue going.

The key in moving forward is not paying too much attention to the end result.

We be looking for that bell, like “DOG WYA??!” LOL

We be looking for that bell, like “DOG WYA??!” LOL

Just keep working, constant progress and when you look up you’ll be surprised at how far you’ve come.

It’s just like our boxing sessions. Exercising for ten minutes a round, already sounds exhausting by typing it. Putting that much strain on your body (possibly mind) without stopping sounds crazy but after keeping our mind on the workout we barely realize the time that flies by.

When you’re in the grind, its no time to worry about time, its only time to work!

EVERYTHING YOU KNOW

EVERYTHING YOU KNOW

teach-everything-1140x761.jpg

I remember when I first started my self improvement journey one of the first things I learned was not to reveal everything you know. For a while this made sense because well before WELÇOME© existed, me and a former partner of mine was trying to get shirts made and no one would give us info on how to get anything made. Probably because people were scared of competition and no one told them so they kept the cycle of ignorance going. So I thought that was the natural way of doing things.

Then as I started to accomplish more I began to notice, telling everything you know can’t work against you…if you’re a constant learner. How can you tell everything you know, if you don’t know everything? *minds explode*

People who are scared to share information, may seem threatened by the person who seeks the information or may believe the knowledge they hold is scarce and everyone shouldn’t have access to it.

Granted everything isn’t anyone business and its totally up to you to decide what people should be privy too. However this notion of people gaining a “1-Up” over someone or just using you information is sorta ridiculous.

Always keep in mind most times people aren’t going to use the information they seek from you, so it doesn’t hurt you to tell them because they lack the willpower/fortitude to act on the info anyway.

You can always tell when someone is serious, especially when you make it to a position where people regularly asks you for advice.

I’m not anywhere near where I want to be yet I still receive messages asking for advice on the regular basis. This idea of people “1-Uping” you can’t be fathomable if you keep yourself in active learning mode. Constantly improving is what keeps you ahead, not actively destroying those who seek t get ahead.

It may be a “dog eat dog” world, but there isn’t a need to move vicious all the time. Be willing to extend the helping hand because really the only one who suffer, is the fool who fails to act.

DOING SOMETHING FOR YOUR SELF DOES SOMETHING FOR YOURSELF

DOING SOMETHING FOR YOUR SELF DOES SOMETHING FOR YOURSELF

IMG_3724.jpg

Nothing gives a black man more pride than a clean car or a new haircut. For me its that fresh new haircut that I love getting every two weeks. After a proper haircut you feel like you can take on the world.

When I came home from my haircut I realized man doing something for your self really does something for yourself. When my cut isn’t fresh, I don’t feel like getting fresh. I’ll throw on some busted J’s, hoop shorts, a worn out WELÇOME© hoodie and call it day.

But man when that haircut comes its a different story, boy I’m breaking them ones out the box so quick. I’m taking a nice long shower, (heavy on the DOVE beloved), and you guessed it, the newest of WELÇOME© is coming out the closet.

Having a clean cut just make you want to explore the world more. You feel like a man about business. The good thing is a haircut doesn’t have to be the only thing to give you that feeling. It can be  getting your nails done, running a mile in the gym, volunteering, etc.

Whatever it is that gives you the feeling do not hesitate to go in 100% on it, so you too can feel like a person about action! The world is moving too fast to just be sitting around. Encourage Yourself and get to it!

A BUNCH OF QUARTERS

A BUNCH OF QUARTERS

IMG_7063.JPG

It is true value is determined by perception but perception can be quite misleading. The other day I was washing and I had a bunch of quarters in my pockets. I was just filling up the machines with quarters then, when I reached in my pocket, I was surprised to see that I only had like two quarters left.

I was like “man I just had all these quarters where did they go”? The quarters felt abundant but I probably didn’t have any more than five or six dollars in my pocket.

The quarters led me to think about we can think have so much of something but really it means little. Just because you have more in quantity doesn’t mean there is more in quality.

(I really hate the quantity over quality saying because it’s used by people as an excuse to why they can’t produce anything worthwhile but that is besides the point).

Life give us “quarters” in many forms to help us think about correctly assessing what is valuable and what is not.

Also, the quarters can be used as a lesson for splurging. You may dig into your pocket feeling mountains of currency but then it gets shallow and shallow until you end up with nothing. You always have to keep note of your situation at all times because you don’t wanna end up like me and have the “where did all my quarters go face”?

*what do a “where did all my quarters go face” look like? I will not provide an example but you can imagine it looks filthy and disheartening.*

THE INSTALENSE

THE INSTALENSE

IMG_6582.JPG

IMG_6583.JPG

Recently I was watching an instastory of Pharrell’s as he journeyed through Japan. I thought to myself “man this is really cool what he’s showing me I need to make sure I hit places up like these when I hit Japan “ and then “I thought holy crap this is what instagram is really for.” I believe instagram is a tool to help show people what their aspirations and goals look like in tangible form. By having an inside look they can better visualize desirable things for themselves.

Although mostly instagram is used as an ego-driven instant gratification platform, I believe it to be more credible than that. Japan has always been a dream visit of mine due to how much I love anime and a couple of other things. Seeing Skateboard P expose so much of his routine, makes me actualize the same things for myself.

Another instagram user by the name of Kool.Kiy also serves as an inspiration. He is a talented young man who has his own successful clothing line, though people may not know him personally they have definitely seen his work before.

IMG_6581.JPG

At time he may posts his sales by screen-shotting his Shopify notifications that shows an abundance of sales in short time periods. Now in the eyes of lames, fools, and hams this can be taken the wrong way very quickly.

However in the eyes of myself I see something that can also be for me. Him showing his sales and the process behind his craft allows me to visualize the same for myself and use his a success as motivation and a guiding light rather to hate on.

Next time while surfing thru the gram (which you’ll probably do immediately after reading this) think about each post that features one of your desires, as something that can serve as inspiration.

Like Meek Mill classic captions used to say For Motivational Purposes Only.

OWNERS SET THE PRICE

OWNERS SET THE PRICE

 $2 for this smh.

 $2 for this smh.

Yesterday I walked to the store and needed some sweets. I grabbed a pack of M&Ms  and when the cashier told me it cost $2 I almost lost my lid. I thought to myself “My mans how did this small pack of M&Ms cost two bones”? I paid the $2 and dipped.

Upon my exit, I told myself “welp that what you can do when you own the place. You set the price to whatever the hell you want”. People can complain about prices all day but there is nothing one can really say if they’re not the owner.

People have the choice of paying or not paying. Owners will always have the people that will pay the price they set regardless, so your complaining means little to nothing to them.

SHOP: gettothecorner.com

SHOP: gettothecorner.com

Its like with my brand (WELÇOME©: HAND DRAW GRAPHICS), people are so used to black creators pricing everything for $20 it was an extreme shock when I came out the gate charging $149.99. Many people ridiculed me and some were vocal In how they wouldn’t dare pay that much.

IMG_3207.GIF

But as the owner I can set the price to whatever I want and someone will buy it. Bottom line, if you want to see a difference move from consumer to owner and you can make logistics and quality control decisions till your face turn blue.

NOW I WANT YOUR SNEAKERS

NOW I WANT YOUR SNEAKERS

KD 12

Lebron 16 “MARTIN”

Lebron 16 “MARTIN”

The sneaker market is at a whole new level with resells and a whole new system for making purchases. Yet there seems to be something lacking when it comes to basketball sneakers. Why? Why do we purchase basketball sneakers anymore? I buy Lebrons because Bron is my favorite player so I have an emotional connection with him. I Like KD sneakers but its because of a stylish design not for a basketball connected reason (even though they’re comfortable to hoop in).

IMG_2766.JPG

Last night when Dame Dolla dropped that magnificent game winner, impulsively I wanted to buy every pair of Dame 5s on the market. Those are the moments basketball fans live for and those are the moments that make you want to purchase an athlete’s signature sneaker.

IMG_2773.GIF

When you seen Mike achieve greatness it made you want every pair of Jordans. When Allen Iverson crossovers were sending people into the next part of the solar system, there was no question that you wanted every pair of questions.

What we need is more moments like last night. Incredible moments that make us wanna run to Nike, Adidas, etc. and cash out because we just witnessed a superstar perform a superstar act.

With sneakers being as valuable as they are, basketball sneakers must do it job in reestablishing the emotional bond they once had in consumers. And the spark of that bond starts with the athlete.

RUSSELL’s NEW STAT DOMINANCE

RUSSELL’s NEW STAT DOMINANCE

Russell Westbrook is undoubtedly one of the most dominant players in the history of the NBA. Averaging Triple Doubles like they’re layup drills the inhuman machine seems to be on train of greatness that doesn’t look to stop soon. However outside of points, rebs, and assists there is another category Russ may be in the running to dominate....SNEAKERS.

Russell and his son, Noah in the new Why Not 2.0 sneakers.

Russell and his son, Noah in the new Why Not 2.0 sneakers.

The New Why Not 2.0 sneakers are so damn good, I never been affected by a Westbrook sneaker in this way before. When it comes to Jordans that aren’t the retros, the Jumpman brand exhibits trouble creating aesthetically pleasing shoes. Outside of a few Melos and a couple of Team Jordans, Jordan is trash when it isn’t a retro.

Air Jordan XXXI PE WHY NOT

Air Jordan XXXI PE WHY NOT

Air Jordan 28, WHY NOT PE

Air Jordan 28, WHY NOT PE

Now when it comes to Westbrook his spark was started to me when he donned the air Jordan 28, they were a beautiful OKC colorway and somehow seem perfectly fitting for him. Accompanied with a Air Jordan XXX1 PE, Russell and sneakers seem like an uniquely perfect fitting pair. Then his first signature was released and I wasn’t a fan. The first Why Not sneakers didn’t look visually pleasing and I thought Russ would be victim to the lackluster designs of Jordans that aren’t retros.

Then the WHY NOT 2.0 sneakers drop and boy those took me surprised. I was like wow now this is how a Jumpman signature shoe should look. The silhouette looked perfect and the colorway was vibrant and awesome. I wanted a pair immediately!! I thought if Russ could keep this up he’ll no longer be TRIPLE DOUBLE RUSS oh now you’ll have to call that man QUADRUPLE DOUBLE RUSS !

Imagine Dragons w/ Lil’ Wayne, performing at the College Football Championship

Today me and my brother were talking about music and he brought up to me how he’s listening to Imagine Dragons now because of the college football championship. Imagine Dragons is a band I believe wouldn’t typically be heard by my brother even though he has a wide range of music choices. Him hearing them made me think of how important proper placement is. Your music on the right platform, your clothes on the right person, just solely being in the right place can change your life in an INSTANT.

UNITED MASTERS x NBA, the new partnership allowing independent artists to shine on the NBA’s digital platforms.

That importance is also noticed by Marketing Expert and Music Pioneer, Steve Stoute. Through his new startup , UNITED MASTERS, independent artists can sign up to have the opportunity to have their music played on NBA platforms. Stoute understands how labels have utilized sports biggest events to highlight their artists but the monopoly the labels has exempts the lower tier artists from having a chance of a huge audience via sports. I even signed up for a chance to be featured lol.

Placement is extremely important it’s why top fashion brands pay for retail space inside department stores like Macy’s , Bloomingdales, etc.

Brands pay top dollar for very strategic placement in the store.

Extreme product placement is heavy throughout Grown-Ish/Black-Ish, you don’t see that many BUICK logos for nothing lol.

Although the placement is extremely important what’s more important is having good product to begin with. No matter how many people see the product, the positioning won’t be an advantage to you if the product isn’t good to begin with.

Many times reflecting on the past can carry negative connotations. Connotations which are rightfully deserved because dwelling too long on the past hardly results in anything good and doesn’t allow a person to grow.

However in this case the past serves as the very beacon of inspiration I need to create. Every first of the month I look at old blog posts of the same month to find cool references or any images that may spark an idea or two. This morning I found a TON of them.

There’s an whole exhibition dedicated to the Archive and evolution of Mickey Mouse going on in NYC, it’s called MICKEY TRUE ORIGINAL. GO CHECK IT OUT ‼️ TICKETS: https://partners.disney.com/mickey-the-true-original-exhibition

Reflecting on the past via archives can help bring the present you up to a different stand allowing for new creative energy to express yourself with. It’s why fashion houses or animation studios keep their archives filled with originals and masterpieces because it can serve as a new force in the present even though it is buried in the past.

While being in the present is key to creating and avoiding dull moments, never be afraid to dig deep in the past in order to spring forth a new more vital you into the present and/or future ! HAPPY NEW YEARS !

Here’s the photo , I’m referring to. Burberry checked bag alongside a flower , not a lot going on but it looks perfect.

I was looking at a photo today on Instagram and I was really intrigued by the simplicity of it.

The simplistic nature of the photo made me wanna make a purchase and it just made think about the strength of composition.

Not good compositions either the trunk or painting needs to move.

Not good compositions either the trunk or painting needs to move.

To me composition is just the ability to put things exactly where they need to go. It’s like a producer placing a tag right before the beat the drop, an interior decorator placing the right center piece, or even a seamstress sewing the logo at just the right spot.

Perfect composition the Balance of colors and the demand of focus to the character’s face make this a fine example of composition. purchase the shirt here 👉🏾 gettothecorner.com/welcome/theboyandthefox

If you ever seen something off balanced then you can attest to how much strategic composition matters. That’s why when you see great composition, which I define as a bold feature that’s aesthetically simple, you too will be able to show your appreciation for fine composition.

Yesterday me and my girlfriend (whoa that still looks crazy on paper lol) was at her house studying when she moved a table to other side to use as a desk. When she moved the desk everything but the kitchen thing came flying off of it. I was like “Dang you gon break the table before it even get over” ( or something to that sort) and thats when she promptly responded “ it made it though”. At that moment is when it clicked to me. It’s not as important as to what happens while you get “there” as long as you get “there”.

Most of the time in our lives we have things planned down to the tee. As ambitious people it hurts when a plan doesn’t go as flawlessly as you would have like it to. But here’s the things about plans: NOTHING EVER GO AS PLANNED. So as you move from one side of the room to the next you may lose a few things on the way but you’ll be able to say “I made it though” . #PEACE

I LOVE TIMESKIPS

I LOVE TIMESKIPS

An essential element of storytelling is using the passage of time well. Timeskips, for those who don’t know is a literary device that advances the timeline of the story ex number of years that usually show older versions of the protagonists.

The reason I love timeskips so much is for, the simple of idea of growth. You ride with these characters for a lengthy amount of episodes and then you get to see a dramatic change and it makes it feel like as if you’ve grown up with them.

IMG_4203.PNG

The most perfect example is in NARUTO. When the first series started to air on Cartoon Network and when I first read it in Shonen Jump,  I was roughly the same age as Naruto.

When the timeskip happened in the next series I was also around his age which made it literally feel like I was growing up with them.

Shinpachi on the Latest GINTAMA volume cover

Shinpachi on the Latest GINTAMA volume cover

But timeskips is a heavy discussion topic for today because I’ve been watching GINTAMA and they just had a timeskip. A weak and supporting character named Shinpachi just received massive growth due to the time skip.

He was always super serious, couldn’t really hold his own in a fight, and was far from cool. But since the first time he was shown in the timeskip he possessed the same poise as the series’ main protagonist (Gintoki). His growth is making me more invested in the story because it is always amazing to see the weak go to strong.

From Left to Right:  Shinpachi, Gintoki, Kagura

If you’re a storyteller yourself think about the usage of timeskips, when done correctly it is one of the biggest payoffs in storytelling.

NEIGHBORHOOD HOT

IMG_1047.JPG

Often times people make moves when things are “perfect” at the time. Everything looks good but no thorough inspection is given. It’s like moving into a neighborhood in the winter.

As the old saying goes “you never know a neighborhood until it’s the summertime”. When the summer come around the heat brings the people out and allows the true essence of the neighborhood to show.

When the heat of life pressures us we are forced to come out “winter bubble” and face the summertime madness. We face the summertime madness by emerging from our “perfect” comfortable position and make a calculated decision by facing the uncomfortable heat. Only then will we know what we’re truly made of.

HIGHLIGHTERS SAVED MY LIFE

HIGHLIGHTERS SAVED MY LIFE

IMG_1044.JPG

Its finals time for school and that means even more reading and studying than the ungodly amount already required. During these periods I’ve been using a highlighter a whole lot. Now previously before the law school experience it was rare I used a highlighter but now I keep one with me like its a strap lmao. It then hit me that highlighters really are the saving to grace to understanding and learning.

I use the highlighters to make an emphasis on ideas that sticks out to me and it makes recalling the information very easy because it jumps right out the page.

IMG_1045.JPG

I also use highlighters a lot when I read my bible, so if I’m just freelancing through the book, I can just read the standout verses I like to read everyday.

Highlighters should be propped up more in society as they are a tool for the brain that makes organization a breeze. So what are you waiting for? Start highlighting today.

TO GIVE IT A CHANCE

 TO GIVE IT A CHANCE

Much of my life I’ve been picky about the things I like. Whether its food or music or clothing, I stuck to what I really liked and that was it. But as we grow so do our interests and this is ok. New times can often change perspective.

poster for GUNDAM

poster for GUNDAM

I thought about this when I seen a poster for the upcoming GUNDAM movie. First thought..”Boy this is going to be trash”. Then I thought “Wait..I thought the same thing of the Transformers movies (first one was good the rest was garbage)” and I loved the first Transformers but I hated the cartoons and I don’t really have a thing for robots.

first one was lit

first one was lit

If we don’t at least give some things a chance then we will never really know if we don’t like it. Now some things don’t have to be tried but as far extracurriculars/interests a second look can always payoff rather than just writing something off because it isn’t immediately peaking interest.

AMAZON ECHO, VOICE ASSISTANT . 🗣 HEY ALEXAAAA

AMAZON ECHO, VOICE ASSISTANT . 🗣 HEY ALEXAAAA

New technology would never be able to thrive if things weren’t given a chance. Like voice is about to become a big staple in our culture. It sounds uninteresting now because that aren’t what we’re used to but we weren’t used to supercomputers just hanging in our pockets either. So what have you written off lately? It may time to revisit that thing and give it a chance for once.
