 THE QUIET MVP: YG

2018, as I mentioned before as been one hell of a year for music. But while everyone is looking at the biggest name in music , Bompton’s all star has been having a quiet MVP year.

YG never been short on features as you’ve heard him tear up tracks like “Gucci on My” and “Want Her”, this year seemed to unlock an even more consistent beast.

NIKE SWOOSH

YG sounds very fluid on the track with Memphis breakout star, Blocboy JB and its probably my favorite song from his mixtape.

PROUD

“Me and these hoes can’t get along (why?) cuz my mama ain’t no hoe”! Easily one of the best lines from that song. Not to mention he has his mother throwing up gang signs and rapping his verse, how fire is that?

SHE BAD

Man so simple but so got damn catchy. And it make you want every damn bag this young man is talking about. “Louis Bag (Aye), Gucci Bag (Aye), Prada (Bag).”

Basically beloved if you haven’t been paying attention to YG this year its never too late to start. His new album Stay Dangerous is coming soon.

So you achieved an incredibly difficult accomplishment in your life? Congrats, now the whole world is waiting to take you down, you should feel proud. Society tends to focus plenty of energy on winning "the big score" but hardly ever prepare for what come afterwards. Once you've surpassed everyone in your competitive sphere you immediately paint a target on your back.

When Drake started to receive unprecedented praise as the biggest artist in the world people instantly went to "dethrone" him, sort of speak. The Patriots entered their season opener as winners on the biggest stage in football and went home with an L on the first night.

There's a quote from Dr.Dre that goes " You said you wanted a spot like mine But remember, anybody can get it The hard part is keeping it, motherfucker."

the quote above is taken from Kendrick Lamar's "Wesley's Theory" from his 2015 LP, TO PIMP A BUTTERFLY

The challenge isn't in winning it's the consistency of winning. Once you win you proved yourself to be the best but you give ammo into making others better. Take for example, the Golden State Warriors. After their acquisition of Kevin Durant, this past off-season left teams scrambling to compete with the juggernaut in Oakland, making trade deals left and right. But remember the KD trade happened as a result of Lebron being too good.

The best always make people readjust but the greatest always continue to readjust their game as well.

CHANGE THE ORDER: AN INSIDE LOOK ON PERSPECTIVE

CHANGE THE ORDER: AN INSIDE LOOK ON PERSPECTIVE

FullSizeRender.jpg

Yesterday I was having my usual jam session, listening to my current rotation of songs from my playlists. When I changed the filter of how the songs was sorted (it changed from date saved to artists by alphabetical order) I discovered songs that I haven't listened to in a while. This action made me think of how if we can just switch one way of how we all always do a task,it could be the same as giving ourselves a brand new experience.

Before I made the sorting change I was having the same songs on repeat and it started to grow tiresome. I kept saying "'man I need  some new tracks to listen to". We could be searching for new ways to shop, cut our hair, etc. the continual doing of the task isn't the problem, it's the remedial action of doing the task one way that is a nuisance. The great thing about shifting perspectives is it doesn't take much to approach a situation from a different angle, it could be as a simple as changing your sorting options in your playlists.

COMPETITION FOR THE SOUL

COMPETITION FOR THE SOUL

IMG_1138.JPG

Today I will attempt to dispel the negative connotation of competition. When people think of competing they usually associate it with people comparing themselves to others ,which in turn leads to trying out shine them every waking moment. Although the previous statement is true for certain people, true competition is really about YOURSELF!

This awakening was sparked by a conversation Drake had w/ Coach John Calipari on coach's podcast "CAL CAST". Drake spoke about how he can't truly take a break because he fear someone is not taking a break and they would stumble upon something he would've stumbled upon had it not been for the brakes. This may seem to be fueled by the desire to stay ahead of everyone else but I believe it is a testament to the bar Drake set for himself. He also revealed to Coach Cal that his reason for continuing to do music is for his legacy and having music that he can appreciate from himself 20 years down the line.

How can he focus on such a daunting task by constantly comparing himself to other artists and always worrying about ways to 1-up himself? The answer is he couldn't , this is why competition is about self when you out perform someone it is only a by-product of outperforming yourself. Say you set out to beat a previous sales record made by yourself and when you beat the record you also end up outselling your opposition. The only way you could outsell your opposition is if you worked on records that were strong enough to beat your previous endeavor, see what I mean?

On an ending note, Coach Jim Harbaugh also spoke w/ Coach Cal on another episode. They both said they have a quote in their office that reads "JUST COACH YOUR TEAM". If they Coach their teams to the best of their ability that isn't a testament to out doing their opponents(though it plays a role) , it is a more of testament of due diligence to focusing on self.

Hopefully that debunks this negative notion of competition. Competition is great because if it doesn't do anything else it gets you to look at yourself!
